This Tostitos Party Bag Knows You’ve Been Drinking

A limited run of Tostitos tortilla chips is being introduced, sold in bags designed with sensors that detect alcohol on one’s breath. Directing a huff into the Tostitos Party Bag will summon a green image to the front of the bag if you’re sober, or a red “Don’t Drink and Drive” admonishment if you’ve been tippling. After yelling at you in furious crimson, the bag’s red image ponies up a $10 Uber credit to keep your inebriated posterior from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.

There’s a caveat, though: this oracle grades on a strict pass-fail curve, merely detecting the presence of alcohol—ANY alcohol—in one’s exhale. It isn’t a breathalyzer in the traditional sense, so  don’t expect it to tell you whether the amount of hooch in your system is above or below the legal threshold.

While this is one of the more interesting innovations in pre-Super Bowl food marketing, it feels worth pointing out that anyone who feels driven to consult their snack food packaging for confirmation of whether or not they’re too toasted to drive is probably better off not taking any chances and finding another way to get home.

We’re just saying.

She says: You’re right – if your bag has to tell you you’re at your limit — something’s off. AND — I think this is great. If the technology is reliable, it could be on the ubiquitous disposable red cups and save a lot of lives. I love it.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. From a technological (as opposed to a pedestrian’s) viewpoint, we wholeheartedly agree! Here’s hoping people who choose to consult the bag/cup will obey it when it advises them not to drive, though 🙂
