Indispensable kitchen items: The Santoku

To the uninitiated, the word santoku might on first hearing sound like the name of some Mediterranean island paradise where no cocktail glass goes ungarnished with a pink paper umbrella or pineapple wedge.  Its actual meaning has less to do with idyllic shorelines than with fine Japanese craftsmanship. The Flavorful World kitchen would be lost without one.

A santoku is a multipurpose kitchen knife originating in Japan. It is lighter and shorter with a thinner blade than traditional Western kitchen knives.
