Let Them Bake Cake (on NYC’s LES, May 6th)

Springtime block parties / And bakers competing…
Skilled, loving artisans / Deftly eggs beating…
Fêtes marked by frosted gems whose flavors sing…
These are a few of my favorite things…

(Yes, Virginia, there is a reason I’m a food blogger and not a professional lyricist…)

Photo credit: Mary-Irene LangI’m filing this under The Growing List of Reasons I Miss My Old Stomping Grounds More and More: On Sunday May 6, 2012, New York City’s Henry Street Settlement is throwing down old school with a block party celebrating the 145th birthday of its founder, Lillian Wald.  Not only are live music, refreshments, and old-fashioned games on the agenda, but the event will also feature a birthday cake baking contest.

You heard me.

Open to a maximum of 20 entrants (one cake per entry), the contest requires advance registration by May 3, 2012 and will happen at the Settlement’s headquarters, 265 Henry Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Click here to get full details on the where, when, and how of attending this enjoyable free event and entering the baking contest.  Then figure out how you’re getting to NYC on May 6th . Or if you live close enough that getting there is no issue for you, decide which cake recipe in your arsenal offers your best shot at taking home a prize.  Much thanks to Joe W. for the tip!
