Recent Feed: Cafe Deluxe at Washingtonian Center in Gaithesburg MD

On a recent lunch outing with the family, not the first that I’ve enjoyed at Cafe Deluxe, I drew artistic inspiration from some menu items I’ve found to be more than a little tasty. As I’m the first to admit that my talent for food photography is an evolving process (read: needs improvement) and as I happened to own the newest camera-equipped smartphone among those at the table with me, I thought I’d snap a few pictures to share and to praise these dishes now captured for posterity.

Gruyère Mac & Cheese w/ Prosciutto

GRUYERE MAC & CHEESE W. PROSCIUTTO
I don’t think I’ve ever visited and not ordered this appetizer. It always arrives at the table piping hot and the bits of diced prosciutto that swim throughout the molten Gruyère teem with rich, salty savoriness that hasn’t yet fallen short of greatness.

Steamed Mussels in White Wine Broth w/ French Fries
STEAMED MUSSELS IN WHITE WINE BROTH W. FRENCH FRIES
There’s much to like about these mussels juicy and warm as a kiss. Accented with pleasing flavors of wine, rosemary, and butter, this is a dish one tastes with one’s nose first, as its aromatics are immediately affecting and inviting.

Roasted Lamb & Goat Cheese Sandwich on Sourdough
ROASTED LAMB & GOAT CHEESE SANDWICH ON SOURDOUGH
Lamb is among my favorite roasted meats. Sourdough is arguably my favorite kind of bread. French fries are just plain delicious anytime. There’s no part of anything on this plate that I didn’t love (and eat.)

Braised Boneless Short Ribs w/ Mashed Potatoes & Broccoli
BRAISED BONELESS SHORT RIBS W. MASHED POTATOES & BROCCOLI
Tender meat and pillowy potatoes aside, the red wine sauce is tasty enough that if it were available by the glass, I’d order it and sip with genuine affection. Yes, I’m weird like that. But I stand by my comment.

Apple Crumble w/ Vanilla Ice Cream
APPLE CRUMBLE W. VANILLA ICE CREAM
I admit it: by this point in the meal, I was distracted (whether by the afternoon’s sunny warmth, or by the couple of glasses of wine in my stomach by then, who can say?) and tasted before snapping the picture. Note the spoon dig at which the utensil tip is pointed. What this picture doesn’t show is this light, warm caramel sauce-drenched sweet getting devoured so dirty that I should be ashamed of myself.
