Don’t bother scouring your neighborhood video arcade for this one. It isn’t widely accessible as of yet, instead, existing mainly at charitable events around Durham, North Carolina. Created for Raleigh, NC’s Big Boss Brewery with a mind toward a more engaging form of beer sampling, The Last Barfighter (its name a play on the 1984 movie titled The Last Starfighter) is a 2D arcade game in the vein of the ones a lot of us grew up with as kids. Like its predecessors, Barfighter’s gameplay revolves around a player’s ability to kick, punch, headbutt, and impale (seriously!) his/her way through a succession of one-on-one fistfights populated by toughs bent on laying a mighty smackdown upon thee (a.k.a. your fellow barmates who’ll be playing against you.) Unlike its predecessors, the entirety of the in-game action takes place in a bar. Dish out more punishment than you take, and the game cabinet rewards you for your troubles by pouring you a cold beer. Sure, in real life, rewarding a barfight participant with beer seems a bit like rewarding an arsonist with fresh matchbooks, but as an arcade game, the concept works, and one can only hope than more of its kind will soon follow. Beats the hell (literally) out of Beer Pong, no?
