Flavorful World’s Friday Fourplay offers up a bite-sized tidbit of info on each of the four food- and drink-related things we found most interesting each week.
LeftoverSwap Your Unfinished Food
There’s a new food-sharing app due for release later this month that will allow folks to bequeath half-finished meals to strangers located within a certain geographic proximity. Called “LeftoverSwap,” the app will let one take a smartphone photo of the unfinished food being offered and post it to an online bulletin board for viewing by local, potentially cash-strapped individuals seeking a cost-free route to a filled stomach. Interested parties can then arrange to meet and share or trade unfinished portions. While its origins seem innocuous enough (counted among the reasons for its creation are reduction of food waste and overeating) I fear that issues like residual saliva content in any food being received, potential improper food storage/refrigeration by the sharer, and good, old-fashioned human malicious mischief in the form of food tampering make this one seem a bit too risky for me to try anytime soon.
Jerky Gets Fancy
Once upon a time, there lived Three Jerks who wanted to do delicious things with dried meat that had never been done before. They launched a Kickstarter campaign to assist them on their quest for dehydrated high-quality beef excellence. Its funding period closes on August 29, 2013, so we’ll have to wait until then to see how this story ends. Personally, they had me in terms of available prep styles at “Chipotle Adobo” and “Memphis BBQ.” Heck, they had me at “filet mignon jerky.” The addition of gold flakes to create their “Midas Touch” jerky is a lovely thought, but to what degree it will enhance the eating experience remains to be seen.
The Ramen Noodle Burger
Only one hundred beef patties on custom-made ramen “buns” are coming to the Sun Noodle stand at Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg and after tomorrow they’ll be gone again. If they taste even half as good as they look, then this is a terrible time for me to not be in NYC, Good thing the weather has been mild as of late; I’m predicting long lines for this one, and no one wants to brave extended exposure to sweltering temperatures, even for a bite of handheld awesome. Arrive early if you hope to avoid being that 101st person to join the queue, because once they’re gone, they’re gone.
We All Scream Foie Ice Cream
In other cool, Brooklyn-related food news, Oddfellows Ice Cream Co. in Williamsburg recently rolled out a foie gras-flavored ice cream. Available only in-house and only as a single-scoop serving, it also incorporates cocoa and peanut butter into the mix, rounding out what just might be a perfect trifecta of luxurious textures and flavors. Sounds destined to raise eyebrows as well as spoons.
