So as of today, the United States government has shut down for the first time in nearly two decades. This is a food and drink blog, so I’ll forgo making any political commentary. I’ll save that bit of discussion for the people who’ve known me longest and best. Suffice it to say that I wish like hell that things hadn’t come to this, and that my heart and mind are with those non-essential federal employes who’ve been unceremoniously put out of work for however long the standoff in D.C. lasts. Understandable are anyone’s feelings of exasperation, resentment, and anxiety over how the next few days will play out, not just in terms of political policy, but also what devastating toll even temporary income loss may take on families’ personal finances throughout the country. We share those concerns.
Washington Business Journal and The Washington Post ran articles yesterday listing restaurants and happy hour specials where federal employees can eat and drink for less (and in some cases, for free) in the D.C. area. These lists are being continuously updated as more bars and restaurants rise with specials to offer.
Included among these are Z Burger, where a government I.D. will net its holder a free burger between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. during every day of the shutdown, Astro Doughnuts, where a free doughnut or chicken selection awaits government I.D. presenters for the duration of the shutdown, and a steadily-growing number of establishments. We at Flavorful World join everyone in hoping for the best regarding a swift resolution to the shutdown. However, it’s nice to see that of all the things D.C.’s furloughed may find themselves wanting for today and in the days to come, sustenance will not be one of them.
