Waffle + Donut = Wonut, Denmark’s 3,300-Year-Old Coffin Beer, A Poconos Nudist Beer Festival, and Canada’s Pizza Cake

Flavorful World’s Friday Fourplay offers up a bite-sized tidbit of info on each of the four food- and drink-related things we found most interesting each week.

Chicago’s Wonut

The doughnut’s evolution is ongoing at the Waffles Café in Chicago. Minds as clever as they are benevolent have formed a sugary hybrid beast called the Wonut, born of the crossing of waffle and doughnut.  One can’t help thinking of a certain other hybrid doughnut confection that will doubtless inspire comparisons between the two.  If it isn’t careful, and if this new culinary  ends up being easier to get than its predecessor (as in, not requiring interested parties to line up for hours outside the establishment that sells it), then the aforementioned unnamed pastry could well end up handing its lunch money to the Wonut on a regular basis.

Millenia-Old Coffin Beer

The Danish National Museum has partnered with Denmark’s Skands Brewery to reconstruct a beer from samples found along with fossilized human remains in a 3,330-year-old coffin. Egtved Girl’s Brew lists honey, bog myrtle, and cranberries  among its ingredients and is available both at the museum shop and online.

This June: Naked PA Beerfest

On June 28, the nudist Sunny Rest Resort located in the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains will host a “Bare Beach Beer Bash” for people who are so over clothing. Unlimited beer samples will be in store from 1pm to 5pm for all (naked) comers, along with live music (no word on whether the band plays in the buff.) If free beers and bared rears are your thing, details are available here.  As for me, I’m going to sit here a while longer and reflect on the incredible bravery required of people willing to go naked amidst a sea of strangers, and try to get the phrase “Screw your courage to the sticking place” out of my head.

Pizza Layer Cake

This isn’t yet a thing, but you have the power to make it happen by rocking your power to vote. Canadian pizzeria chain Boston Pizza recently reached out to fans asking by means of an online poll what pizza innovations they’d like to see, and promising to create the entry that receives the most votes.  As of the writing of this Friday Fourplay column, the “Pizza Cake” leads the results (as well it obviously ought to.)
