It goes without saying that winemaking is an ancient and noble art. In Sicily, it is also a responsibility that winery Barone Montalto takes seriously, as evidenced by its mission statement as cited on the company’s website: “A major objective has distinguished us from the rest: to put a strong and wealthy land in the public eye and introduce its distinctive and authentic wines, making them recognized and appreciated throughout the world.”
Barone Montalto was born in 2000 in the province of Trapani in Santa Ninfa, Sicily. It manages an approximate 400 hectares of vineyards, most of which are situated in the heart of the Valle del Belice (Belice Valley). Right now, Montalto Vineyards’ fruttaio (fruit chamber) is preparing to host the best grapes among its massive 80-ton yield, which will compose the final blend of Ammasso.
Ammasso is a limited availability Iconic wine made from grape varieties Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown and vinified in the hills surrounding the area of Santa Ninfa in the Valle del Belice, Ammasso is obtained from a careful selection of grapes. During harvest time the finest grapes are hand-picked and arranged in a single layer in small boxes of not more than 5 kg each. This allows the grapes to remain intact and not be crushed by the weight of other grapes. After harvesting, the grapes spend 4 weeks drying in the fruttaio which is ventilated and with a constant temperature. This period of desiccation concentrates the flavors and natural sugars inside the grapes.
“After collecting the white grape varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, which are in the process of fermentation, with a potential good acidity and freshness, we are preparing to collect red grapes. Despite a climate that could be defined as continental, we expect structured and very elegant wines, ready to satisfy the international markets,” says winemaker Federica Lauterio.
For Barone Montalto, Ammasso is more than just a label: in it, the company finds the highest expression of quality, the result of careful and demanding research. Driven by passion for the land and a deep respect for tradition, Barone Montalto also embraces innovation, a crucial factor in its reputation for making award-winning wines that comes from the soul of Sicily but with a modern interpretation.
