Flavorful World’s Friday Fourplay offers up a bite-sized tidbit of info on each of the four food- and drink-related things we found most interesting each week.

Edible Origami

A 16-seat dining room in Tokyo, Japan is taking molecular gastronomy to new heights. El Bulli-trained Japanese chef Koichi Hashimoto is a pupil of celebrated chefs René Redzepi and Ferran Adrià, and has applied his culinary talents to a 6,800-yen menu at Tokyo’s new, soon-to-be-booked-solid restaurant Celavird. Precision plating joins a variety of food textures and flavors to create a unique multi-course dining experience that includes, among other things, edible origami cranes made from sheets of celeriac.

You Put Your Egg Whites In, You Put Your Eggs Yolks Out

So, here’s what you’ll need to know in order to enjoy the video above: it involves a feat that can only be properly performed with adhesive tape, panty hose, and a flashlight. But that setup, rather than ending with the most uncomfortable riddle punch line of all time, ends with a hard-boiled egg being cooked with its yolk on the outside and its white on the inside.  Watch it. Then re-watch it. Then try it. Preferably not in a carpeted room, though. Egg liquids are much easier to clean up on a bare floor.

The Somm San Francisco Deserves

Gotham city has Batman. Hell’s Kitchen has Daredevil. And since the first of this year, San Francisco has had The Secret Somm. The Secret Somm doesn’t fight crime, though. Instead, this valiant wine saint’s neverending battle is against the forces of winelessness. Because wine is the right of all sentient drinkers. A mystery millionaire who has given away more than $4,000 in wine (more than 75 bottles) this philanthropist’s stated goal in doing so was simply to give something back to her community in a fun way that spreads happiness. Sounds like a mission accomplished to me.

“Vice Cream!” She Screams

This story has Valentine’s Day (which arrives tomorrow on February 14th) written all over it. British ice cream purveyors Licktators will soon debut an Ecuadorian chocolate/Lady Prelox-laden “Vice Cream.” The product is so-called because these two components are said to independently possess aphrodisiac properties. The ice cream that brings them together is purported to be able to get women feeling randy after just a few bites. I’m inclined to remain skeptical about this one until I see confirmation of its claims. But despite my not being sure how to feel about the implications of a product like this, I have no doubt that it will inspire polarizing discussions. We’ll all scream.
