The Mooma Wine Chiller/Aerator is a convenient way to cool wines to optimal drinking temperature and to keep chilled wines cool longer. An easy to use item, one simply places it in one’s freezer for a few hours before inserting the frozen stainless steel instrument into the open neck of your favorite bottle of wine, ideally one that benefits from chilled serving.
The product’s positive qualities are many. It doesn’t just chill your wine, it also aerates it, a step crucial to achieving fullest flavor expression. Its flared upper end equips it with a contoured spout for easy, drip-free pouring. It eliminates the need to bury your bottles in ice-filled buckets that take up valuable table space and drip messy water trails every time the bottle is lifted out of the melting ice. It is also compact, another obvious advantage it holds over the ice bucket with regard to storing when not in use.
One caveat I should offer regarding this product is that when inserting it, it is important to first pour a small portion from the bottle, perhaps 3 or 4 ounces. This is because the amount of liquid that the rod displaces is easy to underestimate, and my failure to account for this on my initial outing led me to overflow the bottle. Had I read its instructions in full, I might have come by this knowledge in a more waste-free manner and could have saved myself a few drops of the precious, however since I doubt I’m the first person ever to make the error (and am to unlikely to be the last), it bears mentioning.
It likewise bears noting that this product will not make room temperature wines freezing cold. No major issue, this, since wines generally aren’t meant to be drunk in an extreme cold state, but one that could impact impressions of the product if one is unclear about what to expect. What the Mooma does quite well is lower unchilled wine to recommended drinking temperature, and maintain coolness in bottles that are already lightly chilled. These are as much as one can—or should—ask of a product of this nature. Regarding products of said nature, the Mooma, while being somewhat standard of its kind, more than delivers on its every claim.
