Your Weekend Should Be All About This Mint Julep Trio and Kentucky Derby Viewing Event

If you’re planning to be near the National Harbor on Saturday May 6th, 2017 and you have more than a passing fancy for the ponies, there’s an event you’ll want to check out. Preferably while draped in your most resplendent finery.

To celebrate the Kentucky Derby going down this Saturday, Blossom Cocktail Lounge (tucked inside the MGM National Harbor ) is holding its first annual horserace viewing party. And because the Derby is the pinnacle of horseracing set against an unspoken backdrop of seeing-and-being-seen, this event is taking your enjoyment seriously: They’re throwing down Maker’s Mark Mint Juleps and Bourbon specials, as well as gifts from STITCHED Haberdashery.

Those of you who can’t make the party don’t have to feel left out on Derby day.  You can kick back with one (or all) of these three inventive spins on the mint julep, each of them featuring Maker’s Mark® Bourbon. Go traditional with a straight-up classic rendition, sweeten the pot with the likes of amaretto and white crème de cocoa, or pour some sparkling wine into the mix if you’re feelin’ fancy. Or if your horse comes in. Especially if your horse comes in.


Maker’s Mark Mint Julep

  • 1 – ½ parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • Fresh mint
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup* muddled with mint
  • Splash of distilled water
  • Powdered sugar
  • Mint sprig for garnish
  • 1 cup granulated sugar*
  • 1 cup distilled water*

Mix together simple syrup muddled with mint, Maker’s Mark® Bourbon and distilled water. Fill glass with crushed ice and pour mixture over top. Sprinkle top of ice with powdered sugar. Garnish with a mint sprig.

*Simple Syrup: Heat to dissolve sugar, stirring constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.


Bourbon Balll Julep

  • 2 parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • ½ DeKuyper® Amaretto Liqueur
  • ½ DeKuyper® White Crème De Cocoa
  • ¼ parts Dekuyper® Muddled Mint
  • Sugar and crushed pecans

Pour Maker’s Mark® Bourbon, DeKuyper® Amaretto Liqueur, DeKuyper® White Crème De Cocoa, Dekuyper® Muddled Mint over ice in shaker. Shake well and strain over ice. Sprinkle with sugar and crushed pecan.


Champagne Mint Julep

  • 2 parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • 2 parts sparkling white wine or Champagne
  • ½ parts elderflower liqueur
  • Lemon twist and mint for garnish

Mix together Maker’s Mark® Bourbon, sparkling white wine, elderflower liqueur. Muddle with mint. Pour over crushed ice and garnish with lemon twist.
