Of all the places one might expect to find clarity, an assortment of chocolate-covered almonds would at first seem like an odd source. That didn’t stop a recent shipment that arrived at our door from ushering me toward an unexpected realization with regard to chocolate-covered nuts. Sent by Skinny Dipped Almonds, the three varieties—Dark Chocolate Cocoa, Dark Chocolate Raspberry, and Dark Chocolate Espresso—share a common feature that, though uncomplicated on its face, brought me an epiphany.
It is true that dressing almonds in luxurious chocolate robes is not a new practice; chocolate-dipped nuts have existed for quite a while. What’s different about Skinny Dipped Almonds is that the nuts remain the clear focus of the eating experience, with the chocolate playing the supporting role it was always meant to serve. The chocolate coating is applied lightly enough that they allowed me to enjoy—possibly for the first time ever with regard to such a snack—the sensation of eating nuts that are coated with chocolate, rather than chocolate candies that each just happens to have a nut entombed at its core. So, the aforementioned realization to which this sampling led me was that here again is an instance in life where less is indeed more. As relates to striking an ideal balance between chocolate and nut, Skinny Dipped Almonds gets it right, with delicious results that prompted even perpetual hard sell Mrs. FlavorfulWorld to exclaim on first tasting, “These are perfect!”
As for how they taste, the flavors derive from a light dusting of all-natural essences that finishes each variety. The Dark Chocolate Espresso, my personal favorite, folds the richness of coffee into the earthy smoothness of ethically-sourced dark chocolate, proving once again how well the two complement each other. The Dark Chocolate Raspberry nuts get rolled in all-natural fruit powder to produce a vibrant flavor through which the berries whisper, supporting the cocoa element without competing with it. The Dark Chocolate Cocoa variety possesses a flavor richness owed in large part to the slight tanginess that underlies dark chocolate’s subdued sweetness and the final dusting of cocoa powder that completes the package.
Based out of Seattle, Washington, Skinny Dipped Almonds is a women-run company whose products are sold in over 1700 locations. The almonds are delicious (and more than a little addictive) as well as being gluten-free, a good source of fiber, and high in plant protein, making them a perfect snack for the fitness-conscious, or anyone who enjoys snacks that are crunchy and sweet, but still feel light and indulgent.
