Prominent tequila brand Patrón is adding a touch of dark fantasy to its product line. The celebrated distillery, working in collaboration with Oscar-nominated film director/screenwriter Guillermo Del Toro, has crafted a limited-release tequila that leads with del Toro’s sensibilities and a touch of the visual poetry at the heart of his filmmaking aesthetic.
The connection between the man and the tequila is rooted in a shared point of pride: that of them both hailing from Jalisco, Mexico. That kinship would spawn an extra añejo tequila sold with a smaller bottle of aged orange liqueur made from aged Patrón tequila (with the two bottles designed to resemble a skeletal torso and skull, respectively) and produced with del Toro taking a hands-on approach to aspects from physical packaging design to the ritual of how best to enjoy the tequila. This involved, among other features, a slide-out drawer at the base of the box upon which to light two included candles to form an altar for your chosen cocktail.
“Tequila courses through the veins of my native land, Jalisco. It represents a communion between spirit and earth, steeped in time and tradition, and a source of pride that roots us and defines us both,” says del Toro. “Through the years, I have been offered many collaborations in designing and executing different products. I have never been tempted. This creation has been an adventure, and a privilege.”
The tequila, christened “Patrón x Guillermo del Toro”, is said to embody flavor essences of clove, citrus fruits, and caramel, and is available in limited quantities at fine spirits retailers throughout the U.S. for a suggested retail price tag of $399.
